Saving water in your business
London is a water-stressed area, with less water per person than
countries such as Syria. The situation is likely to
worsen over the next decade, due to changes in climate and a
growing population.
The business sector accounts for approximately one
third of the water used in the UK. It is,
therefore, important for businesses to minimise water
wastage.
Being water wise can also save your business
money, cut your business's carbon emissions, and minimise
your business's impact on the environment.
How to improve water efficiency in your business:
- Fix leaking taps – a leaking tap can waste
5500 litres a year
- Insert flow restrictors on taps; this can
halve the flow of water from taps
- Educate staff on the importance of saving
water and how they can save water
- Ensure pipes are protected from the cold
weather - bursts and leakages can increase due to
frost
- Install water butts to collect rain water,
which can be used on site for cleaning or landscaping
- Monitor water bills - this can help you
identify new leaks
- Buy water efficient devices when purchasing
new equipment
- Insert ‘save a flush’ devices into single
flush toilet cisterns and save one litre of water per
flush. Contact your water company for the devices.
