Pollution Control
The Pollution team is primarily responsible for the
administration and enforcement of the:
- Environmental Protection Act
1990
- Environment Act 1995
- Control of Pollution Act
1974
- Clean Air Acts.
- Water Industry Act 1991
These Acts are concerned with pollution
to land, air and water.
Air Quality
In line with the Government's Air Quality Strategy (
AQS )
, the team is
currently monitoring the quality of air in Redbridge.
Land Quality
The team is also charged with the responsibility
for developing the Redbridge Strategy for the
Identification of Contaminated Land. This is a national
requirement and every council in the UK is currently looking at
this issue.
Water Quality
Local authorities have a statutory duty to keep themselves
informed about the wholesomeness and sufficiency of all public
water supplies. This is achieved through liaising with Thames
Water and Essex & Suffolk Water.
Furthermore the Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009 require
local authorities to carry out a risk assessment of any private
water supply to establish whether there is a significant
risk to human health.
Surface water such as lakes and rivers are generally regulated
by the Environment Agency, however we will investigate complaints
regarding drain/sewer misconnections or localised water
pollution.
Other Pollution - Odour, Dust, Light
We investigate complaints of nuisance from odour, dust, smoke
and light pollution arising from commercial land and premises.
