What is the referendum?
On 5 May 2011, Britian is being asked whether to:
- keep it's 'First Past the Post' voting system or
- switch to Alternative Vote, a form of preferential voting
in which voters rank candidates in order of preference.

The Referendum Question
"At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to
elect MP's to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote'
system be used instead?" - Yes or No?
What is the current 'First Past the Post' system?
- Voters mark one candidate on the ballot paper with a cross
- The candidate who gets the most votes in their constituency is
elected the MP.
What is the 'Alternative Vote' system?
The Alternative Vote - widely referred to as the AV -
system sees voters use numbers to rank candidates in order
of preference.
- You put a 1 next to your first choice
- 2 next to your second choice
- 3 next to your third choice and so on.
Anyone getting more than 50% of first preference votes
is elected.
If that doesn't happen, the candidate with the
fewest votes is eliminated from the contest and
their second preference votes are allocated to the
remaining candidates.
If a candidate now has more than 50% of the votes
remaining in this round they are elected. If not, again
the candidate with the fewest votes is removed from the contest and
their next highest preference for a remaining candidate is
allocated to that candidate. This process is repeated until
one candidate has 50% of the votes remaining in a
round.
More information about the referendum will be posted to all
households by the Electoral Commission in April 2011.
