More about the Mayor of Redbridge
The First Citizen of the Borough
The Mayor is the First Citizen of the Borough and has a very
important role to play for the Council during their term of
office, which runs for one year starting with the Annual
meeting of the Council each May.
What does the Mayor do?
- the office of the Mayor is not political
- the person represents the Council at civic and ceremonial
events both in and outside the Borough
- the Mayor also Chairs all Full Council Meetings
The Mayor is likely to attend over 500 engagements each year
including:
- opening fairs / fetes
- visiting schools, day centres and hospitals
- receiving delegations from around the world
- acting as guest speaker at dinners / receptions for all kinds
of local groups and organisations
- welcoming new businesses to the borough and
- attending concerts and engagements involving local drama
groups.

The Crest is the formal badge for London
Borough of Redbridge.
It was created in 1964 by the College of
Heraldry following the merging of the Borough of Ilford with
the Borough of Wanstead and Woodford to become the London Borough
of Redbridge.
The motto "In Unity Progress" means "Together we will go
forward".
