Trees in Conservation Areas

All trees within Conservation Areas, including conifers, are
protected and require council permission to carry out
works.
There are 16 areas of special character in
Redbridge, called Conservation Areas. The easiest way to
find out if you live in one to use our Redbridge i
interactive map.
Our new Trees in
Conservation Areas leaflet provides further information.
Additionally, some of these trees may also have a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). Before
considering any work to trees on your property, please
email planning.enquiry@redbridge.gov.uk
to find out if there are any TPO (Tree Preservation Order).
Work on trees in a Conservation Area
It is an offence to undertake any work on trees in a
Conservation Area without giving six weeks notice to the Council.
Works on trees include:
- cutting down
- topping
- lopping
- root pruning
- uprooting
- damaging or destroying.
Work on trees with a trunk diameter of less than 75mm at a
height of 1.5m from the ground do not require notice to be given,
although evidence of the tree size should be kept.
If a tree is not subject to a TPO (Tree Preservation Order) and
is dead, dying or dangerous formal notification is not required but
we should be informed first to avoid any penalties.
Trees removed for this reason must be replaced. If proof is not
shown after the work has been done we are likely to take the matter
further as we consider trees to be an important part of
Conservation Areas.
Please download our leaflet at the bottom of this page.
Notification Procedure
You must notify us of intended works involving trees in a
Conservation Area that do not have a TPO (Tree
Preservation Order). You must give six weeks' notice of any
intended works.
Within that time we will inspect the tree and consider the
effect of the proposed works on the health and setting. We will
either agree to the works or issue a TPO (Tree Preservation
Order).
Any agreed work must be completed within two years or a new
notification of intent must be made.
If the tree already has a Tree Preservation
Order (TPO) then consent must be obtained before work can be
undertaken.
To apply please download the Works to
Trees / Trees in Conservation Areas (PDF,
82kb) application form.
