Planning Policy Statements (PPSs) and the older guidance notes (called PPGs) are prepared by government and apply to England and Wales. The documents explain what statutory provisions should be met and provide guidance (to local authorities) on policy and the operation of the overall planning system.

Local authorities must take them into account when preparing thier Local Development Framework. The guidance may also be relevant to decisions on individual planning applications and appeals.

New Planning Policy Statements continue to emerge, particualry in the post-election period.
