Fairtrade
Redbridge became a Fairtrade Borough in September 2008 and is
part of the world’s largest Fairtrade city, London.
Redbridge’s campaign began in 2005, following a Resolution
passed by the Council in late 2004.
Fairtrade Redbridge
The community group Fairtrade Redbridge was set up as part of
Redbridge’s bid to achieve Fairtrade Borough status and the
group of committed volunteers continues to raise awareness and
encourage the use and promotion of Fairtrade products in
Redbridge.
Fairtrade Redbridge aims to:
- increase the understanding of Fairtrade within the community
through events and publicity
- make the Directory of Local Stockists available and encourage
consumers to use more Fairtrade products
- encourage retailers, catering suppliers and businesses to use
Fairtrade products
- encourage more faith organisations to support Fairtrade
- support local organisations that want to be more involved
- encourage local groups, schools and universities to
support Fairtrade and hold their own events
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is trade with a difference. It is a way for us to help
the world’s poorest people every time we shop. Through Fairtrade,
producers receive a fair and stable price for their products, so
that they can lift themselves and their families out of poverty,
pay for basic medical care and send their children to school. In
many cases they get extra money - a premium - to invest in the
community.
How to support Fairtrade
- Choose products with the Fairtrade Mark, the only guarantee
that the product meets international Fairtrade
standards.
- Support the Fairtrade Redbridge Campaign. Go to the
Campaign's website for
more information on local activities and events.
- To find out more about what the Council is doing, contact
the fair trade officer on 020 8708 2272.
