Picture of trees and wildlifeThe Redbridge 'pound for pound' scheme lets you get involved in the planting of new trees in your area.

Trees improve and enhance the environment.  New trees are often planted as a memorial, a celebration, or to educate young people about the importance of nature.

Want more trees in your area?

Under the 'pound for pound' scheme, Redbridge Council will contribute 50% to the cost of supplying and planting trees in your area. Applications can be for a single tree or for larger tree planting schemes.

Who can apply?

Any individual, group or organisation can apply to the 'pound for pound' tree planting scheme.

An application can be made for any location within the Borough, on private or public land.

Applications for trees in places identified as deficient in existing tree cover are particularly welcome, especially in front gardens where many in the area have been paved over.

How to apply

Any applicant should draw a plan for the proposed planting and supply as much information as possible. This should include the number and species of tree preferred and the reasons for the request.

If the proposal is on a public highway or on land owned by the Council, we can advise on species selection, positioning, planting plans and ongoing maintenance.

Once the application is received we will check the suitability of the location, tree species and siting.

In most cases applicants will be given a decision within eight weeks. Certain proposals may take longer if consultation is needed with the Highways Service or with utilities companies.

Tree planting policy

The aim is to ensure that the right kind of trees are planted in the right place and that the right care is provided.

The main points regarding the planting of new trees are as follows:

  • that trees be planted in accordance with Council policies and strategies, particularly in areas identified as deficient in tree cover
  • that trees be planted to replace existing trees that are removed
  • that the trees planted be of locally native species that are appropriate for the location
  • that new trees planted maintain species diversity throughout the Borough
  • that trees be planted to ensure a high establishment rate through maintenance.
