The way we use energy in the home has an impact on the environment. The more energy we use, the more carbon dioxide (CO2) we release into the atmosphere, which contributes to climate change. So, by saving energy in the home you are helping the planet as well as saving money.

If you cut down your energy use at home, you can save hundreds of pounds a year! Follow our tips below and start saving today.

Top tips to save energy in the home

  1. Switch off - turn off lights and appliances when not needed. Remember, standby is not off -make sure to switch off at the wall
  2. Use energy efficient lightbulbs - they use up to 80% less electricity, but produce the same amount of light
  3. Turn down your thermostat - reducing the temperature on your thermostat by one degree could save up to 10% on your heating bill
  4. Upgrade your boiler - fitting a high efficiency condensing boiler can save you £200 per year 
  5. Insulate - roof and cavity wall insulation is quick to install and could save you £110 per year. You may be eligible for a grant – contact Warm Zone for more details.
  6. Draught proof - fix drafts and fill in floorboards with sealants - it could save you £20 a year on your heating bills. For more information, contact the Energy Saving Trust
  7. Use less hot water - only boil as much water as you need and take shorter showers.
