Do I need planning permission?
Do I need planning permission?
You do not always need to make a planning application if you are
looking to alter or improve your home. We offer three levels
of service depending on what it is you are looking for.
1. Quick, free online advice
Our Permitted Development page
explains when and where you may not need to make a planning
application. However, you are advised to read The Small
Print at the bottom of the page, and to seek written confirmation
before starting work, if you are in any doubt.
2. Informal opinion from us
For householders looking to extend or alter their homes, minor
developments or alterations to shopfronts we offer a free drop-in
service at the One Stop Shop.
This will usually answer questions such as "Do I need Planning
Permission?" or "Does this advert require permission?".
It is important to remember that the work you wish to carry out
may also need permission from Building Control; for advice on this
you can contact them on 020 8708 2529 or visit their webpage
What is Building Control?
3. A binding answer
If the work/development has already taken place the only way to
know for sure if the work required permission is to apply for a
"Certificate of Lawfulness". These applications are popular
when you come to sell your home several years after
perhaps converting a garage, building a conservatory but you
hadn't checked if permission was required at the time.
If you haven't yet started work and need to know for sure that
permission is not required you are advised to make a Certificate of
Lawfulness (Proposed) application.
In either case you can apply online or
download the relevant application form
and post them to us, along with the relevant fee.
