Rubbish bin or recycling box?
What goes in my recycling box and what goes in my bin?
In Redbridge we do our best to recycle as much waste as
possible. Your recycling is taken to the Ilford Recycling
Centre where the different materials are separated,
then sent to different facilities around the UK to be
recycled.
As recyclable waste is treated differently we collect it in a
separate box:

Please remove all lids and bottle
tops from plastic bottles and glass bottles / jars.
Some items may need a special collection by us.
The following is waste that is not collected as
part our domestic waste collection. This
includes:
If you have a specific item to get rid of, please see our list
of items for disposal options.
Below are some common items that you may use with further
information as to exactly what you do with them.
Food containers
Food containers cannot be put in your recycling box. If
the container has the recycling logo on it, or says it can be
recycled this does not mean that it can be recycled in
Redbridge. In fact rarely can these containers be recycled
properly anywhere. Please either rinse and take
these items to Sainsburys stores in Newbury Park, Ilford and
South Woodford which provide their own mixed
plastics recycling containers, or put them in your domestic
rubbish.
Plastics
The only plastic item that can go into your recycling box is
plastic bottles (including milk bottles, detergent bottles, shower
gel bottles, bleach bottles and shampoo bottles). No other
plastics can be put in the box and this does include things like
yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, fruit punnets, plastic bags and
anything else that is made of plastic. Please keep these out
of your recycling box because otherwise they can cause
problems at the recycling facility. Please either rinse
and take these items to Sainsburys stores in Newbury
Park, Ilford and South Woodford which provide their own
mixed plastics recycling containers, or put them in your
domestic rubbish.
Paper (including junk mail and yellow pages)
Your recycling bin accepts all types of paper including
magazines, newspapers, envelopes (including the ones with
windows) and even the yellow pages and Catalogues . You can
also put in leaflets (even the glossy ones) but if they
have a plastic film or packaging please remove it first.
Cardboard
For your cardboard to be taken, it must be flattened and
presented inside your existing recycling box. It may be
necessary to cut larger items up to ensure they fit in the
box. For information please visit our cardboard recycling page.
Tetrapak cartons (juice and other cartons)
Tetrapak is a type of carton that is typically used
for:
- juices (such as 'Tropicana')
- soups (such as 'Covent Garden')
- milk (such as Soya milk)
These items cannot go into your recycling box because we don't
have the facility to recycle it in Redbridge. They can be recycled
at the Reuse and Recycling
Centre or the following bring sites:
- Fullwell Cross Car Park
- Sainsbury's Newbury Park
- Tesco - Charlie Brown Roundabout
Lids and bottle tops
Please remove all lids and bottle
tops from plastic bottles and glass bottles / jars.
These cannot be recycled and can pose a hazard when the bottles are
compacted.
If you are unsure as to whether you should put items in your
rubbish bin or your recycling box then contact us.
Fluorescent light bulbs
These cannot go in your recycling box, however they can be taken
to Chigwell Road Reuse and Recycling
Centre, or alternatively to collection points at
Sainsbury's stores in Ilford and Newbury Park. For more
information about these collection points please visit
Recolight's
website.
