Real Nappies in Redbridge
Modern washable nappies, also known as 'Real Nappies', are
a brilliant alternative to disposable nappies with many
benefits for parents, babies and our planet. Redbridge Council
is currently
offering
a real nappy trial pack, worth over £25, for just £5 to
residents with children under 18 months.

Why use Real Nappies?
Money - Cloth
nappies will save you up to £500 on a first baby and
if used for another child, even more.
Health - Disposable nappies are
made from crude oil, plastics and chemicals whose long term use has
not been tested. Real nappies are made from natural or
synthetic materials neither containing active chemicals.
Environment - They are better for the
environment. More than 58,800 disposable nappies are sent to
landfill in Redbridge every day! Each one takes up to 500
years to break down and this amounts to thousands of pounds of tax
payers' money and tonnes of carbon emissions in production,
purchase and disposal.
So much choice, so choose our trial pack...

The facts that bust the myths
No soaking!
Due to modern machines, soaking is not required. Dry pail
your nappies in a lidded bucket. A disposable liner can be used to
easily dispose of the solids before the nappy is washed.
Do they really work?
Yes they do! There are lots of parents, in Redbridge and
elsewhere, who use real nappies and love them! They are said
to leak less than disposables provided they fit snugly and cause
fewer problems such as nappy rash.
Smelly?
Parents of cloth bottomed babies report that they enjoy the
lack of plasticky 'nappy' smell surrounding thier babies. Solids go
in the toilet and they don't have piles of rubbish awaiting
landfill on their properties.
Hassle for you?
Disposable: 1. Shop, 2. change, 3. indoor bin, 4. external
bin.
Cloth nappy: 1. change 2. nappy bucket 3. washing machine 4.
line/airer.

Yes there is washing with cloth nappies, but there is with
babies anyway and it should only be about two washes per week.
Remember you're gaining from this: saving money, avoiding
chemicals, avoiding unnecessary waste and cuddling a cute
cloth bum as well as never experiencing the just run out of nappies
hassle!
A cloth nappy and a disposable side by side - many modern
cloth nappies are exactly the same to put on a baby as modern
disposables. Cloth nappies are bigger on, because they're not full
of superabsorbent chemicals. This creates soft landings for
toddlers and a good hold on the hip for parents. It's also a very
cute silhouette and keeps trousers up nicely.
No better for the environment than disposables?
An environment agency report in May 2005 stated that
there was no environmental benefit to using cloth nappies. However,
this report was so heavily criticised that it was re-written and
re-published in October 2008. The new study highlights that when
best practise is followed (washing at 60 degrees, line drying where
possible, not washing at 90, not using conditioner, not
soaking, minimum tumble drying and indeed not ironing as
the previous report presumed) carbon savings of 40% can be
achieved.
Earlier potty training?
Children in cloth nappies know the difference between wet and
dry, and tend to potty train earlier and more easily. Disposable
product manufacturers create products to expand thier markets such
as pull up pants which do not aid potty training and are
costly. For a
report on a study into this area see the Real Nappies for London
website.
