Guys working on floods

Manhole covers and gully covers (drains) often get confused.  Please identify first whether what you have found is a manhole cover or a gully cover (also known as a drain).

A gully cover is typically known as a drain.  They are found on the road, next to the kerb.  They are used to collect rainwater from the public highway.  Sometimes these gullies are embedded in the kerb forming a metal box within the kerbstone.

If you have found a gully cover that has been damaged or dislodged please contact us and the Council will fix it.

Maintenance is carried out to the highways drainage in Redbridge as follows:

  • Each gulley is programmed for cleaning once a year, if missed during the normal cleaning programme due to parked vehicles or other obstructions it will be left until the following year. However the missed gully is logged and if missed twice must be cleaned on the third visit.
  • Gullies reported as blocked throughout the year will be logged and left until the normal annual visit unless they are causing a health and safety issue.
  • Gullies reported with missing/broken grates and causing a danger to the public will be dealt with as soon as practicable.
  • Gullies with broken grates but not causing a danger to the public will be added to our programme for maintenance of non-urgent works.

Manhole covers

A manhole cover is typically used to cover holes in roads which are typically used for gas, electric and water.  Sometimes they get dislodged, broken, damaged or they rattlie. If this is the case then you can report it to the Council.

The Council is not responsible for the repair or replacement of manhole covers.  This is down to the company that uses it.  We will contact the company on your behalf when you report it.

Highway flooding

Highway flooding is usually caused by heavy rainfall.  You will notice sometimes that if we have heavy rainfall the drains overflow onto the highway.  This is because the drains get overfilled with rainwater and therefore it floods nearby roads.  This is normal and will usually clear up within an hour after rainfall.

What if it hasn't cleared in an hour?

If it hasn't cleared in an hour then you will need to contact us.  Even though the problem is usually down to Thames Water we would like you to contact us so that we can contact them.

What if water from the highway goes into my property?

If water goes into your property then contact the Council immediately.  We will then investigate the problem.

Water mains leaks

If you experience any water leaks please contact your water supplier.  The supplier should be on your water bill.

Flooded and damaged rivers, ditches, culverts and watercourses

If there is any flooding of Watercourses include rivers, streams, ditches, drains, cuts, culverts (piped sections), dikes, sluices and passages through which water flows then you need to contact the Council.

CatV cable boxes (green cabinets)

These boxes are usually found on the pavement and are used to store wires.  If the doors are open or they are damaged then please report it as per below.
