Home Flood wardens

A flood alert means that flooding is possible.  Be prepared.

Flood alert signIf you are concerned please take note of the following flood alert advice:

What to do:

  • Be prepared to act on your flood plan.
  • Prepare a flood kit of essential items.
  • Monitor local water levels and the flood forecast on the Environment Agency website.

Flood wardens are needed to join teams protecting their communities against river flooding.

Volunteers should be living in areas of high flood risk, who can support other residents and provide on-the-ground information about rising water levels.

What does a Flood Warden do?

Flood Wardens are volunteers who, upon receiving flood warning messages issued by the Environment Agency, warn an agreed number of properties of the threat posed from river flooding.

Typically Flood Wardens:

  • Pass on flood warning information at any time of the day or night
  • Offer advice and information to the public
  • Check that residents in their area have received flood warnings, after they have been issued
  • Are involved in regular meetings with the at risk public
  • Identify and support vulnerable members of community
  • Provide feedback to the local authority and the Environment Agency about people and properties living in the floodplain
  • Provide vital information during flood events e.g. information on blocked culverts and the number of properties flooded

How does the Environment Agency fit in?

The Environment Agency agrees to support community Flood Wardens by:

  • Issuing flood warnings to the Flood Warden
  • Facilitating and supporting the scheme
  • Offering advice and information
  • Facilitating local meetings
  • Promoting Health and Safety
  • Providing wardens with a copy of a Flood Warden scheme Folder, a hi-visibility jacket, roles and responsibilities booklet and medical health declaration form.
