Efficient winter service

The Winter Service Review and Plan sets out the proposals for the 2010/11 winter season to provide a more efficient winter service.

Although some additional roads have been added to the prescribed routes following the review of last winter's performance, it is not possible, given the sheer scale of the highway network and the financial resources required, to grit all roads in the Borough. Once prescribed routes have been treated any resident will be within 500 metres of a treated road. The routes are chosen so primary traffic routes, bus routes and routes where there is significant traffic are treated.

Following Government advice, Redbridge Council has also introduced a Resilience Network which is the minimum network that will be treated to preserve salt in the event that national stock levels fall low again during severe weather conditions.  This approach was adopted following government instructions when severe conditions last winter resulted in national salt shortages. It meant that a smaller network of key roads were gritted but it ensured salt stocks did not run out.

The winter season will commence on 1 November and full standby arrangements are in place and will remain until 30 April.

Councillor Michelle Dunn, Cabinet Member for Highways said, "I welcome this review which will help to keep the traffic moving during the winter and alleviate winter conditions on the roads in the Borough.  I am impressed by the service we provide but these changes should make the service even more effective."
