A summer of fun for young people
1 September 2010
Press release number:PR1145
Young people in Redbridge had a busy summer participating
in activities which have equipped them with a range of new
skills.
The Council’s Youth Service provides positive
activities all year round for young people to help them develop
life skills, many of which see them gain nationally recognised
accreditations or qualifications.
There were more than 550 activities, amounting
to 2000 hours of activities for young people throughout the summer
holidays. These included the Summer Uni programme which saw more
than 1000 young people take part in 50 courses including football
coaching, water sports, fashion design, interview skills,
cheerleading, lyric writing and many more.
Keren Berelson, 15 said; "I have never been to
Summer Uni before, but when my mum brought home the book I had a
look at what was on. I decided to go on the four day film
course as it looked good and I thought it might be useful in the
future. I liked the course as I could practice filming and
editing my own movies. I learnt a lot of skills even just
getting to Hainault on my own and not knowing anyone and having to
make friends was good. I would definitely do Summer Uni
again."
As part of the Aiming High Integrated Holiday project for
disabled children and young people, 28 young people with different
abilities visited Stubbers Outdoor Activity Centre, in Upminster in
August. All who attended overcame personal challenges and took part
in a range of activities including jet skiing, kayaking and
climbing.
There will also be the chance for young people
to gain a new experience and sign up for other existing youth
services at the Y Fest in October.
The Y Fest takes place on 2 October between 2
pm and 6 pm at the Downshall Centre, Aldborough Road South, Seven
Kings and is a celebration of youth achievement.
It welcomes young people and families free of
charge to take part street dance, music, wall climbing as well as
receive information about what else the Youth Service offers like
trips, Youth Clubs, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and sports.
All those who sign up to the Youth Service on the day will be
entered into a prize draw to win an iPod Touch.
