The Reference library is situated in the Central Library in Ilford. It is free to use. Reference services include:  

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Computers
  • A virtual reference collection available 24 hours a day 
  • A quiet study area
  • Books and information on a wide range of subjects

We also stock directories, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and other reference works on most subjects (including medical and pharmaceutical), atlases, rail timetables, hotel guides and telephone directories.

Newspapers. magazines and periodicals

The Reference library has a large collection of national newspapers, magazines and periodicals dating back several years, and in the case of The Times back to 1900.

The titles and holding periods are listed below. You can come in and view them without an appointment. Local newspapers are also available in local studies and archives. For a full list of newspapers and periodicals held in the borough and the details of holdings of back issues, please come to the Reference Library and ask our staff.
