Summer Reading Challenge 2012

Love to read? Sign up for a challenge!

Every year families all over the country are involved in the UK’s biggest reading event for children in libraries, The Summer Reading Challenge. Young readers can discover the joy of reading books in a fun achievable challenge that’s free to attend.

How does it work?

This year’s theme is Story Lab, a celebration of story and the imagination. It follows the quest of 4 children to discover 3 lost items needed to boost the imagination of the Story Lab where stories are made. The aim of the Challenge is for children to read 6 library books during the summer holiday. There are fantastic rewards to collect including stickers, a certificate and a medal. Super Munglers trump cards are also up for grabs as rewards for reading.

Libraries will be holding launch events on Saturday 7 July when children can start to sign up for the challenge. It’s free to join just pop in your local library. Story Lab will run from 16 July to 8 September.

Younger children who are not yet reading can earn a Bookstart Story Lab Certificate of their own.

The importance of reading

The Summer Reading Challenge is a free national reading scheme which grows in popularity every year. Research shows that taking part in the challenge improves children’s confidence and sends them back to school fired up and ready to learn.

Record breaking numbers of children signed up for the challenge in 2011 and in Redbridge there was a 6.7% increase in children completing the challenge by reading and chatting about 6 library books they read. Ask for more details at your local library.
