Recent Projects include:

Iranian Redbridge

Redbridge Museum has been working with members of the Redbridge based Iranian Cultural Society to create a display about the Iranian community in Redbridge. The display will show some aspects of Iranian culture which many Iranians in Redbridge and the UK would be familiar with.

Garden Music Project

Redbridge Museum is one of the partners in an exciting new youth project led by The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, that blends garden research with Mozart.

Museum staff will deliver sessions about the history of Valentines Mansion and Gardens to 120 pupils from Islington. Pupils will then study Mozart's opera La Finta Giardiniera -The Pretend Gardener - and, through a series of school workshops, they will create a range of musical instruments from scratch and then compose and perform new musical work inspired by the gardens and the opera.

The Museum will also create an exhibition to be displayed at Valentines Mansion in spring 2012 and a teacher’s resource pack.

Stories of the World

As part of the Cultural Olympiad, Redbridge Museum is working with a dynamic group of young people on a Young Curators programme. During 2011-2012, the participants will find develop their research skills, find out more about the local area, explore Redbridge Museum's collections and contribute towards an exhibition in spring 2012.

We Are What We Wear

This exciting project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund will explore the world of Kathakali, the classical dance drama from Kerala, south India.

During 2011 – 2012, Kala Chethena Kathakali Troupe will lead a series of specially designed workshops with pupils at Wanstead High School and Fullwood Primary School, Barkingside as well as local community groups including the Redbridge Faith Forum, Redbridge Arthritis Self-Help Network, and the Malayalee Association of the UK, which represents people from Kerala.

The participants will explore the skills of a Kathakali actor such as facial expression, emotion and characterisation. They will discover 200 year old Kathakali costumes and learn about the symbolism of the designs, how the costumes are made, how the make up is applied to the actors and what characters they represent.

The project will culminate in an exhibition at Redbridge Museum displaying Kathakali costumes during October – December 2012.
