Golden years dance troupe
Background
When the Redbridge Pensioners Forum complained there was not
enough for older people to get involved in within London 2012, we
came up with a plan, to form a 100 strong dance group of older
people performing routines inspired by London 2012.
Working with Age Concern and with a chair based exercise
instructor a routine was choreographed, using Olympic and
Paralympic sports as a starting point
East End knees-up and keep fit
The choreography was done to well known songs such as Chariots
of Fire and Rocky theme tunes, as well as some east end classics
like Knees up Mother Brown and My Ole Mans a Dustman.
At the first rehearsal we had just over 40 pensioners come along
to see what this was all about and as part of the Open Weekend
Inspiration Festival, counting down 1 year until London 2012 we had
60 ambassadors in their Golden Years T-shirts ready to show the
youngsters how its done.
As well as being a bit of light-hearted fun, this project is
also about physical activity for older people using chair based
exercise techniques, which strengthen muscles and improve
flexibility and breathing. The project also gives older people the
opportunity to find out more about local and regional plans for
London 2012
The troupe are set to perform again as part of UK Older People’s
week, and we have plans to choreograph new routines and to find new
opportunities to showcase the troupe. We still plan to have 100
performers in time for London 2012.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals take place monthly at various venues
around the Borough. Why not come along and have a look to see
