Redbridge schools are responsible for the appointment of their
teaching assistants and other support roles.
To be a Teaching Assistant you
should:
- Enjoy working with children and be interested in education
- Treat children and parents from all social and cultural
backgrounds with respect
- Be able to build good relationships with children, their
parents and carers, and with teachers
- Be able to work well under the supervision of a teacher and
enjoy working as part of a team
- Be willing to be flexible and creative
- Have good literacy and numeracy skills
- Have a responsible attitude
- Be patient but firm when necessary
- Have lots of energy
- Any further training required will be offered once in
post.
What you need to be a teaching assistant
To be a Teaching Assistant you must be at least 18. There
are no set entry requirements in terms of qualifications - these
vary depending on the school.
Personal qualities and the potential to develop the necessary
skills and experience will be important for all positions - it is
unlikely that you would find paid employment without relevant
experience, and most qualifications for teaching assistants are
aimed at those who are in paid or voluntary employment in a
school.
How to get started
Therefore, a useful starting point is to volunteer to help in
a local school, perhaps for a few hours a week initially. Most
schools welcome help with activities such as listening to children
read, but you will need to undergo police checks before being
accepted. (This is usual for all work with children and other
vulnerable groups).
Having gained some experience you may be able to work towards
qualifications, which will enhance your opportunities for finding
paid employment. You may even find that there are some
vacancies for which you can apply on the strength of your
experience, providing this is extensive enough.
