Overseas trained teachers
We are not currently accepting central applications from
overseas trained teachers
(OTTs)
.
To work as a qualified teacher in
England, you must have Qualified Teacher Status
(QTS)
. Those without
(QTS) can work
as an unqualified teacher ('instructor') or temporary teacher (and
be paid as an unqualified teacher).
In order to gain (
QTS)
, overseas-qualified teachers
(OTTs) need to
ensure that their qualifications and training are equivalent to UK
trained teachers.
The minimum requirements are
qualifications equivalent to English and Mathematics GCSE grade C,
a first (bachelor) degree along with a teaching qualification
recognised in the home country.
The agency responsible for checking
the equivalency of qualifications is the National Academic
Recognition Information Centre
(NARIC)
.
This is a charged service. For further details, please

Further information for overseas
trained teachers
The Government
recently introduced new streamlined arrangements to help
(OTTs) gain
(
QTS)
.
Suitably qualified (
OTTs)
now have the option to
present themselves for
(QTS)
assessment without further
training, and in some cases may also be exempted from the
requirement to serve an introductory year after qualification.
Further advice for overseas trained
teachers in (
QTS)
assessment is available from the overseas trained teachers advice
line.
Teachers trained in the EEC or EEA
can be eligible for QTS without further assessment.
