Neighbourhood watch scheme
Neighbourhood Watch is all about communities working together to
reduce crime and improve their quality of life. A neighbourhood
watch typically covers a small area where you live. Most watches
cover several streets and are run by a coordinator. There are
currently over 120 neighbourhood watches in Redbridge.
What can
I do?
By setting up a neighbourhood watch you
will establish close links with the local police and other partner
agencies and act as the eyes and ears of the local community. This
important work is an opportunity to bring your local community
together to improve safety and reduce the fear of crime. It is also
a chance to get to know the people that live in your area.
Anyone can join
Neighbourhood watch is for everyone -
no matter what your gender, age or ethnic origin. The watch should
reflect the residents that live in the area. There is a shortage of
coordinators from ethnic minority groups so we would welcome anyone
that is interested from all sections of the community, especially
in the south of the borough.
Being involved in a neighbourhood watch
takes a few hours a month and can be extremely rewarding.
Successful watches
There are already many successful
watches solving problems such as anti-social behaviour, obtaining
funding for security gates to be installed around their properties
and liaising with council departments to have approval for parking
restrictions within their area.
Support
Neighbourhood watches have the support
and guidance of a watch manager and your local Safer
Neighbourhood Police Team.
