What are Hate Crimes and Incidents

Hate crime'Hate crimes' are any crimes where the perpetrator's hostility or prejudice against an identifiable group of people is a factor in determining who is victimised.

'Hate incidents' are unpleasant events motivated by hostility or prejudice that cannot be classified as a crime.

The Council, Police and others will take reports of both incidents and crimes and we'll do our very best to help you.

Reporting a Hate Crime or Incident

If you have been a victim of, or have witnessed a Hate Crime or Incident, you can report to one of several organisations using a variety of user-friendly methods.

Types of Hate Crime

Hate crime is generally regarded as any incident where the individual has been targeted due to their:

  • faith or religion (e.g. Islamophobia or anti-Semitism)
  • sexual orientation (homophobia)
  • disability - including physical and learning disabilities and mental health (disabilism)
  • gender identity or transgender characteristics (transphobia)
  • age (ageism)
  • the perception that someone fits into one of these categories, even if they do not.

Incidents of Hate Crime can include:

  • offensive letters or graffiti
  • threats
  • physical or verbal assaults
  • harassment, bullying or online/text bullying
  • robbery
  • damage to property or arson
  • something else.

These incidents can be committed randomly, or can be part of a campaign of continued harassment or victimisation by a stranger, customers, neighbours, extremists groups or even a family member.
