Home Proof of identity

When you make a new claim, or are asked to support your claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit, you will be required to provide:

  • proof of your identity
  • proof of your income
  • Proof of residency
  • proof of rent (where applicable).
  • proof of your savings

Please note that all documents must be originals.

Proof of identity

you must provide any two of the following items as proof of your identity:

(The following are listed alphabetically and not in order of importance.)

  • Bank statement (dated within the last 4 weeks of the claim)
  • Benefit payment book
  • Birth certificate (full or short version)
  • Certificate of employment in HM forces
  • Certificate of employment in the Merchant Navy
  • Divorce/Annulment papers
  • Driving Licence
  • Home office Standard Acknowledgement Letter (SAL 1 or 2)
  • Identity card issued by an EC/EEA member state
  • Letter from solicitor/social worker/probation officer or Inland Revenue
  • Life insurance/assurance policies
  • Marriage certificate
  • Medical card
  • National Insurance number card
  • Passport (current and valid)
  • UK residence permit
  • Utility bill paid in your name for the last quarter
  • Wage slips from current employer

  Proof of income

  • Proof of employment. Your last 5 payslips (if paid weekly), or your last 2 payslips (if paid monthly).
  • Proof of self-employment. Your most recent accounts, or similar records. If you have recently started your business you will need to show us estimated details until we can see the full accounts.
  • Proof of Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment Support Allowance (contribution or income based). A letter from the Department for Work and Pensions or your Employment Service Jobcentre showing how much benefit you get, and when you started getting it.
  • Proof of other benefits and allowances. A letter from the Department for Work and Pensions showing how much benefit you get, and when you started getting it, or your order book.
  • Proof of pensions. A letter from the Pension Service or a bank statement showing how much benefit you get, and when you started getting it

Proof of residency

  • Gas bill
  • Electricity bill
  • Water rates bill
  • TV licence
  • Telephone bill

Proof of rent

You should supply a current tenancy agreement, signed by both yourself and your landlord.  There must be no changes to the original tenancy document. Additionally we will accept a signed letter from your landlord. This must show:

  • Your name and address
  • When the tenancy began
  • The amount of rent you pay
  • How often you pay the rent
  • Which service charges are included

Proof of savings

  • Bank statements
  • Building Society account books
  • Share certificates
  • Premium Bonds
