Further details regarding Housing and Council Tax Benefit
The following will allow you to gather further information,
however, if you are unable to find the information you require
please contact us.
How much benefit will I get?
The amount of Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit you are awarded
will depend on a lot of different things for example;
- How much rent you have to pay
- Your Council tax band
- How much income or savings you or your partner has
- How many children you have
- Whether you have a partner
- If anyone in your household is disabled.
When and how will I receive my benefit?
If you are a private tenant, we will pay you direct every 2
weeks. We prefer to pay your benefit straight into your bank
account.
If you are a Housing Association tenant, you can choose to have
payments sent direct to them or receive payments yourself.
If you are a council tenant, we will pay your benefit direct to
your rent account.
If you are claiming Council Tax Benefit this will be paid direct
to your Council Tax account and you will be issued a new Council
Tax bill.
How do I claim back dated benefit?
We usually award benefit from the Monday after the day we
receive your claim. Sometimes, we can pay benefit from an earlier
date if you have a good reason for not claiming earlier.
If you wish to claim backdated benefit
you will have to show 'continuous good cause' as to why you did not
claim earlier and the reason must apply for the whole period you
wish benefit to be backdated.
How long is benefit paid for?
Benefit continues to be paid for as long as you are entitled to
it. However you must let us know if your circumstances change
in a way that may affect how much you receive . If your
circumstances do change in anyway no matter how small and
insignificant you must let us know. Failure
to let us know may result in us taking you to court.
Can I appeal against my Benefit entitlement?
If you feel that your benefit entitlement is not right then you
can appeal against it.
