Who can apply for Housing Benefit ?
Anyone can apply for Housing Benefit, providing they:
- are liable to make payments in respect of a dwelling, and
- occupy that dwelling as a home.
However, you will not normally qualify for any Housing Benefit
if:
- savings over £16,000 (as a couple or a single person)
- you're a full time student (unless you are disabled or have
children)
- you're not the person who pays council tax or paying
the rent
- you're seeking asylum
- you are living in the UK under a sponsorship agreement.
Housing Benefit can help you to pay your rent if
you're:
- renting from a private landlord
- renting from a Housing Association
- renting from the Council
- living in bed and breakfast accommodation.
Housing Benefit may not cover all the rent you pay. It will not
cover charges for water rates, electricity, gas and some other
services. Home owners can't get Housing Benefit, but, may be
entitled to Council Tax Benefit.
