The Council gives you three ways to benefit from a reduction in
your Council Tax: Discounts, Exemptions or Council Tax Reduction
Scheme. You may benefit from one or more of them, however you would
not get both an 'Exemption' and 'Council Tax Reduction'.
Discounts
The Council Tax bill received by each household within the
borough assumes there is more than one adult resident in the
dwelling. This may not be the case and you may be resident on your
own and could therefore be eligible for a single person's discount
which would reduce your Council Tax by a quarter (25%). There could
also be other reasons why you may be entitled to a discount on the
full Council Tax bill. To find out more information on this

Exemptions

you have a property that falls into one of these categories and for

Changes to Discounts and Exemptions for Empty Properties From 1
April 2013
The Government has introduced a number of changes as part of the
Local Government Finance Act 2012 which will affect some Council
Tax Discounts and Exemptions, for further information and to find
out if you are affected by these changes view the
Council Tax Reduction Scheme (Council Tax Benefit)
On the 31 March 2013 the Government is abolishing Council Tax
Benefit on the 1 April 2013, this will be replaced by a new local
scheme called Council Tax Reduction. The funding for the new
scheme has been reduced by 10% for the London Borough of Redbridge
this means a shortfall of around £2.3 million. The Redbridge
Council Tax Reduction Scheme does not pass this entire shortfall on
to residents but does reduce the amount of help available.
You can continue to apply for Council Tax Benefit (up to 31
March 2013)
Other Changes - Council Tax payers can now choose to pay by 12
instalments
Council Tax payers can now opt to pay by 12 instalments instead
of the existing 10 monthly scheme. The 2013-14 bills will still
show instalment payments over 10 months. If you want to change to
12 instalments, please pay the April instalment as normal and
contact us on 020 8708 5670 and we will arrange this. Otherwise you
can continue to pay in 10 instalments which generally means no
payments are due in February and March.
