Home Rent and mortgage arrears

If you are renting a property then it is very important that you do not fall Private and confidential envelopebehind with your rent.  If you do fall behind (known as rent arrears) then you could be at risk of being evicted from your property.  The help that you can get will depend on who you are renting from.

You may also be entitled to claim housing benefit to help you towards your rent.

Different types of tenants receive different help

Council Tenant

If you are a council tenant you need to contact Redbridge Homes to discuss your rent issues.

Housing Association Tenant

You will need to contact your Housing Association directly.  You should already know who your housing assocation (landlord) is.  However if you dont, you can check your tenancy agreement, or contact us.

Temporary Accommodation Tenant

If you are living in temporary accommodation provided by the Council then you will need to contact the Council's Income Recovery Team.

Important information for temporary accommodation tenants

If you do not pay your rent regularly, the Income Recovery Team will have no alternative but to take arrears recovery action (Pdf 34kb).  If the problem continues, then the Income Recovery Team would normally serve you with a Notice to Quit (Pdf 35kb).

This is the first stage in the legal process (Pdf 34kb) which could lead to you being evicted from your home.  If this happens, then the Council will have discharged its duty to house you, in which case you will no longer receive any assistance from the Council towards your housing needs.

Renting privately

If you are having difficulty in paying your rent, or are being threatened with homelessness you should contact your landlord or agent in the first instance. Failing that you can then contact the Housing Advice Centre.

Own your own home

If you own your own home, you may be able to get help via the 'Mortgage Rescue Scheme'.
