Home swapping
If you are renting a Council or
Housing Association property and you want to swap it for
another Council or Housing Association property (also known as a
mutual exchange) then you can, however, both landlords must consent
to the exchange.
Please note that Redbridge Council does not run this scheme,
however we can give you the right contact for doing a mutual
exchange.
Circumstances where you might not be eligible
- The tenant has to give up the tenancy under a court
order
- Possession proceedings are being taken to regain the
property
- The property is larger than the tenant needs
- The property is too small for the needs of the tenant
and their family and would result in overcrowding or would break
the normal letting criteria.
- The property has been let as a service tenancy
- The property has been adapted for a person with a
physical disability and if the exchange were to go ahead, such a
person would no longer live in the property.
- The property is one of a group, near to a special
facility, and if the exchange were to go ahead someone needing
those services or facilities would no longer be living in the
property (e.g. sheltered housing).
- If a specified type of injunction, an anti-social
behaviour order or a possession order has been granted on the
grounds of nuisance is in force; or if court action to obtain such
an order or a demotion order is pending against the tenant or the
mutual exchange partner, or a person who resides with either party
the Application for a mutual exchange will be refused.
What happens after you apply?
If you are eligible for
the scheme then you are usually put in touch with
'Homeswapper'.
Redbridge Homes are a member of this scheme and, as a result,
the scheme is free to London Borough of Redbridge tenants. This
allows an exchange with almost any social landlord within the
United Kingdom.
