Giving notice of marriage
Book the register office to give notice
What is giving notice of marriage?
Anyone who wants to get married in the UK has to give notice of
their intention to marry. This is a legal requirement and in
most circumstances can be done in Redbridge at the Register
Office.
Before you give notice of marriage
Giving a notice of marriage
- if you are both European Union citizens, and you both
live in Redbridge you may give notice at Redbridge Register Office.
- if one of you lives in Redbridge and one
lives elsewhere, you should each give notice in your own borough
(district of residence).
- if one or both of you are not European
Union citizens, you will need to produce evidence of your right to
marry in the United Kingdom (see notes below) and will have to give
notice both together to any register office designated for this
purpose. Under these circumstances, you may choose to give notice
here in Redbridge or at any other designated register office.
What will I need to produce when giving notice?
You can check with the Superintendent
Registrar 020 8708 7123 what documents will be needed before
attending an appointment. however you would normally need:
- evidence of identification and current name with photo
- proof of nationality
- to produce documentary evidence If you have changed your name
otherwise than by marriage,
- evidence of age – normally passport or birth certificate. If
you are under 18, you will probably need to obtain the consent of
your parents before notice may be given
- evidence of residence – to prove that you
live at your address. This could be a Council Tax bill, utility
bill or bank statement or other similar document
- evidence of marital condition
- fee of £35 per notice
If you do not attend with the necessary
documents it may not be possible for your notice to be taken.
Please note all documents must be originals or certified copies of
originals as photocopies are not acceptable.
How long is my notice of marriage valid for?
It is usually valid for 12 months. This means that
you need to get married within 12 months of giving notice.
