Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History (LGBT) Month 2012

LGBT History month takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community. LGBT History Month is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the histories of:

  • LGBT logolesbian
  • gay
  • bisexual
  • transgender people across the UK.

This is the eighth year that LGBT History Month has been marked across the UK.

LGBT 2012 theme

The theme both 2011 and 2012 is:

"Tackling homophobia and transphobia in the world of sport"

This is to coincide with this years London Olympics and aims to challenge the enduring homo/transphobia that is common to many sports; on the field, in the changing rooms, on the terraces and in media reporting and celebrate diversity within sport. Couple smiling LGBT

The Civil Partnership Act 2004

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 has been significant landmark legislation for the LGBT community. It grants same sex couples the opportunity to secure civil partnerships with rights and responsibilities identical to civil marriage. The Office for National Statistics has reported that the total number of partnerships formed since the Civil Partnership Act came into force in December 2005 up to the end of 2009 is 40,237. Redbridge has seen the numbers of civil partnership ceremonies double over the last three years.

Visit the National LGBT History Month website for more information on the histories and achievements of LGBT people as well as details of events taking place during the month.
