Register Office

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into operation on 5 December 2005 and enables a same-sex couple to register as civil partners, giving them very similar rights to those of a married couple.

Where can Civil Partnerships be formed?

In a Register Office or Approved Premises, but not in a church or other religious building.

What are the legal requirements?

European Union residents of the London Borough of Redbridge who wish to form a civil partnership must give notice of their intention to do so at the Register Office in Barkingside.

Different regulations are in place for non-EU residents of the Borough who should contact the Register Office for advice.

Notice of intention to form a civil partnership may be given up to one year before the date of the event and must be given at least 16 days before by each of the couple in person. Detailed information about both parties will be taken and documents produced to verify this information.

If you are considering registering a civil partnership and would like to find out more information, please contact the Register Office on 020 8708 7123.

How can I give notice?

To give notice, please contact the Register Office who will make an appointment for you with one of our Civil Partnership Registrars and advise you about the documents you will need to produce and the fees payable.

How about the ceremony?

There is no legal requirement for the couple to have a ceremony. Many civil partnerships are formed by the couple and their two witnesses attending informally at a Register Office to sign the civil partnership document.

Other couples choose to turn the forming of their civil partnership into a great celebration involving friends and family. In Redbridge, our experienced Civil Partnership registrars will be happy to work with you to devise a ceremony that is special to you either in the Valentines Suite at the Register Office or in one of the other Approved Premises in the Borough.
