What do I need to know when looking for childcare?

Entrusting a stranger with your child is a big step, so when choosing childcare it is important that you take time to read the guidance that is available and visit a number of childcarers before you make your final decision.

The main choices you have are:

childminders for children from birth to eight years and above
day nurseries for children from birth to five years
out of school and holiday clubs for children of school age (sometimes called Kids Clubs) or
alternatively you may wish to think about employing a nanny or approved child carer.

What other childcare options are there?

Pre school and nursery classes

There are also pre-schools and nursery classes to consider for children who are three and four years old. They run on a part time basis of morning or afternoon sessions.

Childminders for full day care

If you need full day care then you may be able to arrange for a childminder to drop off and collect your child each day and provide full time care in school holiday periods.

This can be very helpful where you have more than one child and want your school age child and baby/toddler to be cared for together.
