Universal Free School Meals

From September 2014 all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be eligible for Universal Free School Meals. By registering your entitlement you will benefit the school your child/children attend.

You are strongly encouraged to register for Universal Free School Meals if you are in receipt of one or more of the listed benefits:

  • Income Support (IS)
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA)
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • An income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) that as of 6 April 2010 does not exceed £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit -during the four-week period immediately after your employment ceases, or after you start to work less than 16 hours per week, your children are entitled to free school lunches

  • Apply for Universal Free School Meals online now (for children who attend a Redbridge school only)

Free School Meals

You are strongly encouraged to register for Free School Meals if you are registering before September 2014 or for any year groups not covered by Universal Free School Meals, and if you are in receipt of one or more of the listed benefits:

  • Income Support (IS)
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA)
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • An income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) that as of 6 April 2010 does not exceed £16,190

If, after reading the information on this page and on the application forms, you are unsure whether you qualify for an award, please submit an application form and we will contact you to let you know if you are in fact eligible. ‘Please note you should apply to the local authority in which your child attends school’. 

Young benefit claimants

Children who receive IS or IBJSA in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals.

It should be noted that children who receive “education suitable for children who have not attained compulsory school age” will still need to satisfy the additional requirement of “receiving education both before and after the lunch period”, before being eligible to receive free school meals.
