What is a statement?

A statement is a legal document which sets out the child's special educational needs and the provision the authority has determined must be made to meet those needs.  The statement is reviewed annually to make sure that it is still necessary and if so, the provision is being made.  Parents/carers have opportunities to discuss the contents of any statement before it is finalised.

My child is due to move to secondary school, how will their statement be changed?

In Year 5 you will be asked to visit secondary schools and then express a preference as to which school you want your child to attend.  They authority considers all Year 6 statements in the autumn term and you will receive a new proposed statement naming the new school and any changes that may be relevant.  You will have a chance to discuss these changes if you wish to do so.  The authority must finalise these statements by 15 February in the year of transfer.

I am moving into Redbridge (or out of Redbridge), what happens to my child's statement?

The new authority has to maintain your statement until such time it can be reviewed.  For practical reasons your child may have to change school, but the help he/she gets should be the same.

I feel my child's SEN have changed, what can I do about it?

The first thing to do is to talk to the class teacher or special needs coordinator to explain your worries. You can have your chance at the annual review to say how you think the statement should be reworded.

Check out the SEN schools page for more information on schools.
