Abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere. You can make a difference by:vulnerable adults

  • asking what you can do to help
  • reporting any concerns you have.

What is abuse?

Abuse is something done to another person that harms them in some way.

This may be:

  • physical
  • sexual
  • emotional
  • financial
  • neglect
  • discriminatory.

Who is an adult at risk?

A person aged 18 years or over who may be:

  • in need of help because of a disability or illness
  • unable to take care of themselves
  • unable to protect themselves from someone else harming or taking advantage of them

Who may abuse?

Anyone can act in a way that is abusive eg family members, friends, neighbours, professional staff, care workers, volunteers and strangers.

What to do if you have a concern?

If you or someone you know may be being abused, or you yourself look after someone and at times get close to hurting that person, you should talk to someone you trust.
