What we do

We work with consumers and businesses to enforce and promote quality trading standards across the Borough.

Our work with Businesses include:

  • advising businesses in Redbridge on Consumer Protection laws
  • investigating businesses that breach Consumer Protection laws
  • prosecuting traders who commit offences
  • inspecting trade premises
  • providing a broad range of information on Consumer Protection matters and other agencies

Our work with Consumers includes:

  • free guidance and advice on consumer statutory rights for all Redbridge residents
  • working with Redbridge Safer Communities partnership (includes the Council, Police, fire service) to tackle bogus callers and stop doorstep crime
  • helping consumers to identify legitimate traders through our comprehensive Buy With Confidence scheme
  • monitoring weights and measures of all products to ensure that the weight or measure of each product is consistent with its price

We also enforce and advise on a wide range of legislation, which covers:Photo of bags

  • fair trading  
  • safety of goods
  • misleading prices
  • counterfeit and age restricted goods
  • false claims on goods and services
  • weighing and measuring of goods
  • act as a lighthouse for consumers to report businesses that sell restricted products to underage persons.

How we can help

OFT's consumer information to move to Directgov from 31 March 2011

From 31 March 2011, OFT's consumer information will be available on Directgov and the Consumer Direct website will close. Any consumers who visit the Consumer Direct website will be automatically re-directed to Directgov.

Consumers should visit Consumer Direct or contact them on 08454 04 05 06 where they will obtain expert help on their rights. Businesses can download a tailor-made advice pack.
