Home Extra care sheltered housing

What is extra care housing?

Extra care housing enables people to continue to live independently in their own home for as long as possible by providing 24-hour care and support.Extra care - adult social services

It is different because you are living at home with your own front door (not in a home). The aim of extra care housing is to have a ‘home for life’.

Extra care housing can also be called sheltered housing.

Who is the service for?

The service is for older people living in Redbridge.

Where are the extra care schemes in Redbridge?

We currently have three schemes:

  • Oakfield Lodge in Ilford Town Centre
  • George Davis Lodge in Barkingside (working in partnership with London and Quadrant Supported Living)
  • Fernways Sheltered Housing in Ilford Town Centre

What do the schemes provide?

Our schemes offer:

  • leasehold tenancy to self contained flats or bungalows with bathrooms
  • communal garden
  • lounge areas with satellite television
  • patio area
  • a range of daily activities such as bingo, Indian head massage, arts and crafts and keep fit.
  • opportunities to go on social events such as visits to the coast and theatre

You can choose to have your meals at the restaurant in the schemes (there is no restaurant in Fernways).

All tenants are given a lifeline pendant to enable them to contact staff in an emergency.

Located within Fernways are four transitional flats offering individuals help to carry out specific rehabilitation activities to enable a safe discharge from hospital to home.

How do I access the service?

To access the service, the eligibility criteria must be met and an assessment of what your needs are undertaken.

For an assessment contact the Community Care Advice Centre.

How much does it cost?

The cost of extra care housing will depend on your personal circumstance. This will be discussed with you once a financial assessment has been completed.

We need to ask for financial information so that your contribution is at an amount you can afford to pay.
